This was the first time that I played here after the renovation. The green is nice, the fairway is well maintained. The tee box is a little shaky, but overall a great course.

Francis Byrne Golf Course is a pretty solid test for a public track. You can tell right away it’s an older design—originally from Charles Banks in the 1920s—but the Rees Jones renovation (finished in 2016) cleaned it up nicely, especially the bunkering and green complexes. It’s not a long course—par 71, just under 6,600 from the tips—but it doesn’t feel short. The greens are on the smaller side and well protected, so you actually have to control your ball into them. You may want to hit an iron off tees just to keep it in position, which felt like the right play given how the holes are laid out. Fairways are tree-lined but fair, nothing overly penal, and conditioning held up well considering how much play the course gets. You’re not coming here for pristine private-club conditions, but it’s definitely better than most county courses in the area. No real driving range, just a limited warm-up area, so you kind of go straight into it. The weather was terrible so I basically had the place to myself but I could see it getting backed up on a busy day. Overall, it’s a straightforward, old-school course where you actually have to think your way around—especially into the greens. Definite

Really nice county course. Everything was in great shape and the greens were very puttable. Appreciated the GPS device in the cart and all of the staff I encountered were very nice. Speed of play was very good for a weekday round. Pictures of the clubhouse and first tee box and chipping area. Recommend!

Amazing course. Carts have touch screen gps, radios can play music, bunkers in almost every fairway makes it challenging. Lots of slope. Greens are very true, not too fast not too slow. CONS - good luck getting a tee time if you’re not a resident….

Really nice course. Just played it for the first time… not too far to get to for my son from lower Manhattan and me from central nj. Course is kept in great shape. Lots of slope and holes that you need to hit to a specific part of the green. Pace was good, staff was super friendly, and the course was challenging enough for any level player. We’ll be back here!
